Helping someone

learn to read is not rocket science!

teacher" To help someone learn to read, you do not have to be a highly qualified, state certified, board approved reading teacher! If you can read this page, speak English and follow simple instructions, then you can successfully teach the skills necessary to help others learn to read.
ABC-123 Read's new, free Learn 2 Read, Read 2 Succeed Reading Program breaks the process of learning to read down into small, manageable parts. By following the clear, simple instructions, you will be directed step by step in teaching someone to learn to read. The Learn 2 Read reading program will not interfere with any phonics program your child is learning in school.

I once believed that teaching someone to learn to read must be a difficult and mysterious task otherwise why would America have such a poor literacy rate? Why can't Johnny learn to read? I still can't fully answer those two questions, though I do have some definite ideas which I'll save for another page. But, I can tell you that there is nothing mysterious about it.

What you will learn in the pages of this site will clear up the mystery that looms over the whole learning to read process.

Does the thought of teaching someone to read scare you?

    garden

It did me when I first started home-schooling.

My bachelor's degree was in biology (it was as far away from the reading and language arts classes as I could get), and since I taught high school biology for several years, I knew I could handle any of the math and science courses, but reading? The thought terrified me.

Somehow I had come to believe that the whole "learning to read" process must be some mystical endeavor beyond the grasp of everyone except the chosen few (aka certified reading teachers). Since, according to my husband, I do things "cookbook style", I began to passionately research the various reading methods to formulate a plan for a task I previously believed to be a murky and obscure process. Yes, I'm one of those people who reads the instructions first before putting something together.

From that original research and much trial and error (my four sons were my guinea pigs) I put together the program that I am now making available to you. I am not the original owner of any of the ideas included in this reading program, they all came from a number of excellent sources, many of which are referenced in the resources section of this website.

...illiteracy contributes to every major social problem facing our cities, counties, state, and nation (NAAL).

It's time to start thinking outside the box.

garden In the United States, one out of every seven adults is unable to read anything more challenging than a children's picture book. According to the US Education Department's National Assessment of Adult Literacy, the nation hasn't made a dent in its adult-literacy problem since the first study conducted in 1992.

Former U.S. Education Secretary Margaret Spellings says efforts in adult literacy are inefficient and "scattered" across government agencies. (USA Today Jan. 8, 2009 http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2009-01-08-adult-literacy_N.htm)

Since the US government has not had much luck in improving our nation's literacy rate, it is up to individual people like you and me to start working at the grassroots level to see that literacy reform occurs.

You are probably thinking all this sounds good, but how can the average American improve our nation's literacy rate if our professional educators cannot? I believe, there are too few of educators and too many children and adults who cannot read. It is time we realize that each individual person who can read is fully capable of teaching someone to learn to read, if they have access to the right tools.

ABC-123 Read is making these resources available to anyone interested without cost. Learn 2 Read, Read 2 Succeed can be downloaded and printed for free. It comes with the instructions and worksheets necessary to help someone learn to read.
